TPC Sawgrass Secrets: The $1 Swamp & the Accidental Island Green
Most golfers know TPC Sawgrass for its terrifying island green. But the more remarkable story may be how a flat, wooded Florida wetland—purchased for just $1—became the permanent home of THE PLAYERS Championship and the blueprint for an entirely new kind of golf course.
A $100 Bet and a One-Dollar Land Deal
Former PGA TOUR Commissioner Deane Beman wanted THE PLAYERS Championship to have a permanent home owned by the TOUR itself. His first choice was Sawgrass Country Club, but its owner, the Arvida Corporation, refused to sell. Arvida chairman Charles Cobb was reportedly so doubtful that Beman could make his plan work that he proposed a $100 “business sportsmanship” wager against him.
Beman refused to abandon the idea. Local landowners Jerome and Paul Fletcher eventually offered the TOUR a 415-acre tract of swampland for one dollar. The symbolic sale allowed them to retain nearby property that would become more valuable if the ambitious project succeeded. Some joked that after seeing the site, the TOUR may have overpaid.
The Course Was Built for Spectators First
Beman’s idea was bigger than simply creating another championship course. He wanted golf fans to experience tournament play more like spectators inside a stadium.
There was only one problem: the property was almost completely flat. Pete Dye reportedly found no more than 18 inches of natural elevation above the waterline anywhere on the site. Lakes therefore served two purposes—the excavated material helped build the golf course, while enormous spectator mounds rising as high as 30 feet created unobstructed viewing areas around key holes.
That revolutionary concept became known as stadium golf, and TPC Sawgrass became the model for the entire TPC Network.
The Island Green Was an Accident
The 17th hole was not originally intended to have an island green.
Dye initially planned a peninsula green with water along one side. However, the site contained some of the best sand on the property, and crews kept excavating it for use elsewhere. Eventually, so much earth had been removed that there was barely enough land remaining for the green.
Pete Dye reportedly told his wife, Alice, that he had a serious problem—he effectively had only 17 playable holes. Alice suggested placing a retaining wall in the excavated area and building the green on top of it. That practical construction solution became one of the most recognizable holes in golf.
The brilliance of No. 17 is not simply the water. It sits between the reachable par-5 16th and the punishing 18th, creating a closing stretch where a tournament can change in only a few swings. Deane Beman deliberately wanted the finish to produce drama.
The Players Initially Hated It
When THE PLAYERS Championship first arrived at TPC Sawgrass in 1982, many professionals were stunned—and not necessarily in a good way. The extreme angles, severe contours and intimidating visual tricks produced heavy criticism, while stars including Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer missed the cut.
Jerry Pate ultimately won the inaugural event. During the celebration, he famously pushed Pete Dye and Deane Beman into the lake beside the 18th green before jumping in after them. It was an appropriately wild ending for a golf course that had already challenged nearly every convention in the game.
More Than an Island Green
TPC Sawgrass is often reduced to one photograph of the 17th hole, but its real legacy is much larger. It proved that a tournament venue could be designed simultaneously for championship golf, dramatic finishes and the spectators watching from outside the ropes.
A failed purchase, a $100 bet, a one-dollar swamp and an accidental island green ultimately created one of golf’s most influential courses. TPC Sawgrass did not merely become the home of THE PLAYERS—it changed how tournament golf courses would be imagined forever.
