Tee Shot
Start the day with a strategic play and drive past the 9th and 18th greens located near the clubhouse. This will give you a good feel for the green complexes and let you spot the daily pin placements, both of which will help you mentally prepare for those approach shots.
Then off to the first tee, where Robert Muir Graves greets with a tightly framed tee shot. This is a theme at Widgi Creek, so it's important to remember to stay laser-focused on your target here and throughout the round. You are in the Oregon high desert, and this course sits at 4,000 ft elevation, so your ball will carry nearly an extra club from sea-level distances. The towering Ponderosa Pines will mask the prevailing west/northwest winds, which would otherwise blow left-to-right on this hole. CaddyTips® recommends looking at the top of the trees today when gauging the wind as you won't have much luck throwing up grass or looking at the pins today.
There are no fairway bunkers to negotiate here, and a drive in the left-center of the fairway will catch a left-to-right pitch that will put you in position A. Low handicap: This hole is short in length, and a well-struck fairway wood, hybrid, or long iron will leave you with a short iron or wedge in. Mid-High handicap: Don't let these trees intimidate you. Select a club that gives you the most confidence in hitting this fairway, and let's start stacking the fairways hit in regulation.
