Tee Shot
Welcome to one of the most unique golf experiences you'll ever have. To put it in perspective, Sheep Ranch doesn't have a single bunker on the property. Even more remarkably, there is virtually no rough—the entire course is maintained at a uniform fairway height using fine fescue. With so much open space, it's easy for your eyes to wander, making it essential to stay disciplined and commit to a precise target on every shot.

For the opening tee shot, CaddyTips® recommends aiming at the left edge of the famous "Ghost Tree" behind the green, or the white clubhouse visible in the distance. A drive that lands in the center of the fairway will naturally feed left down the hidden slope, providing additional roll and an ideal angle into the green.

During the summer months, this hole typically plays into the prevailing coastal wind, while the winter months often bring a helping tailwind. Wind is one of Sheep Ranch's defining defenses, and learning to manage your trajectory is critical. CaddyTips® recommends teeing your driver slightly lower into the wind to produce a more penetrating ball flight, and slightly higher with a tailwind to maximize launch and carry.

Low Handicap: Driver is the preferred play. A well-struck tee shot will crest the ridge before bounding down the fairway, adding significant distance on the hidden downslope and setting up an excellent opportunity to reach in two.

Mid-to-High Handicap: Don't let the absence of bunkers and rough fool you—Sheep Ranch still rewards thoughtful course management. If you can consistently hit your intended target, driver is an excellent option. Otherwise, consider a fairway wood or hybrid to increase your chances of avoiding the trees on the right and the fairway's leftward kick. Think of this as a three-shot par 5, prioritize position over power, and let the course come to you.
