HOLE 1 - SHIRLEY TEMPLE
Short and sweet
Par 4 - 374 / 336 / 266 yds.
Tee Shot
Before heading to the first tee, drive by the 9th and 18th greens near the clubhouse to check out the green complexes and the pin positions today. Robert Trent Jones Sr. would love that you are strategically planning and visualizing your way around the golf course before you even tee off.
Trent Jones Sr. loved naming his holes, and the names were always so clever and fitting. In this instance, SHIRLEY TEMPLE is short in distance and sweet to the eye. The hole has a water hazard that travels all the way up the hole and should be completely taken out of play off the tee. CaddyTips® recommends teeing the ball up on the far left side of the tee box and picking a target in the right-center of the fairway. There is a bunker guarding the right rough that will catch an overswung mis-hit, but with our laser-like focus on our right-center target, we are not concerned.
The winds switch seasonally from a diagonal headwind from the left in Spring/Summer to a diagonal tailwind from the left in the Fall/Winter.
Long Hitter/Low handicap: driver up the right-hand side can carry the bunker with a solid 275 shot, completely taking left out of play. Mid-High handicap: left is to be avoided at all costs, so aim right, and you can even play a fairway wood or hybrid short of the bunker on the right - a good example of how you can successfully navigate and think your way around this course all day long and score well.
