Tee Shot
While you are heading over to the 1st tee, take a minute to go spy on the 9th and 18th greens, conveniently located right by the clubhouse. Take a good look at both green complexes and notice the pin position today. Visualize your approach shot coming in on this hole to stick like a dart where you want your birdie putt. This exercise will set you up for success coming in on these critical holes.
There is not much strategy involved in this opening hole, so what you see is what you get. The focus of the course is the relatively wide fairway, proposed landing area. Challenging that is a cluster of bunkers in the right rough, a slope in the left rough, and trees that will pinball very errant tee shots on each side of the hole. It's best not to overthink it; pick a target left-center and take dead aim. Start the round off with a nice-tempo smooth swing as the hole is not long in distance.
Long-hitters/Low handicap: More long players hit fairway woods than drivers, as that is a higher percentage play. There are spots where you can get away with banging driver, but it is certainly not a "greenlighter," and even a decent struck drive could get a bad break. Mid-High handicap: this is a controlled club all day, whether it's your fairway wood or hybrid. Pick that target left-center and take dead aim.
