HOLE 1 - COPYRIGHT
A straightaway handshake, and a name from the milking barn
Par 4 - 408 / 398 / 365 yds.
Tee Shot
This ground was Pinehurst Farms for over 150 years and passed through only two families - the Giddings, then the Reiss and Bachmann family from 1910. For more than ninety years it bred Grand Champion purebred Holsteins that won national titles under the Pinehurst name. A barn fire in 1993 ended the dairy operation. What replaced it was this golf course, and the holes were named after the cattle: Copyright, Blueprint, Peerless, Dynasty, Payday, Rock-n-Roll. You are playing a scorecard full of prize bulls.
A straightaway par 4 built to let you find your swing before anything is asked of you. The fairway is generous and the trouble is minimal. What is worth knowing is that this hole, and the three that follow, run through prairie beside a residential neighborhood. They are perfectly good golf holes and they are not what you came for. The property changes character completely at the 5th.
Target line: the left-center of the fairway. From there the green opens up and the approach is uncomplicated.
Low handicap: driver at the left-center and nothing clever. If you are cold off the first tee, a 3-wood leaves you no more than a midiron and keeps you in the fat of the fairway. There is nothing here worth risking a poor start over.
Mid & High Handicap: your most reliable club aimed at the middle. This is the easiest driving hole you will see for several hours, so use it to make a comfortable swing and get your rhythm established early.
