TEE SHOT
Pete Dye offers an inviting opening hole that encourages commitment over aggression. Although generous in width, strategic bunkering and subtle fairway contours immediately ask you to trust your target rather than your eyes. A well-positioned tee shot creates an excellent opportunity to begin your round with confidence.
The prevailing wind often plays into or quartering from the left, making club selection just as important as direction. Before choosing a target, notice how the teeing ground is aligned. Resist the temptation to steer away from the bunkers on the inside of the dogleg. Instead, favor the right-center portion of the fairway, using the distant dunes beyond the landing area as your visual target. A committed swing toward the correct target leaves the ideal angle into the green.
Low Handicap / Longer Hitters: CaddyTips® recommends teeing your ball on the right side of the tee box to naturally open the angle into the fairway and allow a right to- left ball flight to follow the shape of the hole. Longer hitters can take advantage of the generous landing area with driver, but there's little reward in challenging the inside corner of the dogleg.
Mid & High Handicap: The opening hole rewards position over power. For most golfers, fairway wood or hybrid is the smarter play. Favor the right-center of the fairway, where you'll leave a comfortable approach while keeping the inside bunkers well out of play. Starting your round from the short grass is far more valuable than gaining a few extra yards. One local note worth carrying to the tee: anything left off the tee flirts with the bunkers and dunes, which is exactly why the right-center line is the correct one here.
