Playing Modern Bunkers
How to adapt your technique to the new style Modern naturalistic bunkers and restored golden-age designs both require different skills than the smooth, formal bunkers of the 1970s-80s.

Read the lie first. Your ball can come to rest in dramatically different positions - clean sand, sandy grass, plugged near a steep face, or perched on a sand lip. Walk to your ball before you commit to a club.
Expect inconsistent sand depth. Modern bunkers don't always have uniform sand. Some have firm bases; some have deep soft pockets. Test with your feet at setup. Accept the bailout if you feel you cannot execute your strategy and hit your spot on the green 8 out of 10 times. When the bunker lip is shaggy and the lip is high, sometimes the smart play is sideways. Bogey from a smart escape beats triple from a heroic attempt. Mind the native grasses. A ball that finds the fescue or long native around a modern bunker is often LESS playable than a ball in the bunker itself. Sand is predictable; grass clumps are not. Treat the surrounding terrain as part of the hazard.

KEY TIP: On modern naturalistic courses, bunkers are part of the strategy AND part of the landscape. Respect them, plan for them, and never assume "it's just sand."
