Tee Shot
Welcome to the famed U.S. Open and Farmers Insurance golf course. Torrey South tests you right out of the gate with a tight tee ball to a hole that bends right. The rough is notorious here at Torrey, so there is a premium placed on hitting fairways. This should be one of your main goals for the round. If it means clubbing down to do so, or moving up tee boxes, then by all means. This hole will play square into the prevailing wind, which seems to always be present at Torrey. And the air is thick here on the coast, so expect 3-5 yards less carry for your shots. Left rough bunkers: 290 Black / 285 Green / 270 Gold. Right rough bunkers: ~45 yds CLOSER than the left — at 245 Black / 240 Green / 225 Gold. Ideal target: center-left of the fairway, splitting the two bunker complexes. Where to miss: short of both bunker pairs. First drive of the day — focus on SMOOTH TEMPO, not distance. Low handicap: driver center-left, controlled distance. Mid handicap: 3-wood center, between the bunkers. High handicap: 5/7-wood or hybrid center — accept a long-iron approach to a wide green. CaddyTips® always recommends that the last couple of swings you take on the driving range should be practicing this tee shot and visualizing your success.
