Hole 1 - The Mountain • Slight Dogleg Left
Canyon wall left — favor right-center for
the look in

Par 5 - 542 / 522 / 463 yds.

Tee Shot
Fun and playable opening hole. SI's pick for BEST par 5 on the property. This hole will normally play into the prevailing wind that runs West-NW through Carmel Valley. The air is thinner here than in the Pebble Beach Forrest, so you can expect more carry and a bit more roll. Safe play: center fairway, right down the middle with little stress. Strategic play: favor RIGHT-CENTER — the SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN on the LEFT will BLOCK YOUR VIEW of the green from a left landing area, so best to come in from the right on your second shot. Carry numbers: the right fairway bunker carries with 250 yds Black (230 Orange). Where to miss: right of the bunker (still plenty of fairway). Avoid: any pull left into the canyon-wall trees. Low handicap: driver right-center, set up the angle to reach in two comfortably with a well-struck shot. Mid handicap: 3-wood center-right as it's a three-shot hole and better to start in the fairway. High handicap: 5/7-wood or hybrid down the middle to set up the best chances for a stress-free three-shot strategy. CaddyTips® always recommends that the last couple of swings you take on the driving range should be practicing this tee shot and visualizing your success.
