Hole 1 - Straight Uphill
Favor left — right ravine guards the green

Par 4 - 416 / 387 / 375 yds.

Tee Shot
One of the host courses of the AT&T Invitational for years, Poppy Hills was redone in '14, but the first hole remains very similar to the original design. The tall pine trees protect this hole from the wind, but if it's blowing, it will knock this tee shot down. Also, it is important to remember that the air in the Pebble Beach Forrest is thick and moist, and you can expect your ball to travel 3-5 yards less. Favor the LEFT side of the fairway. If you catch the right half, you'll contend with trees and a DEEP RAVINE running down the right side of the green. Steep ridges in the right-center fairway will kick errant shots toward the right-side trouble and lateral hazard. Ideal shot is a carry past the ridges: 270 Blue (250 White) — but be cautious; it's easy to drive the ball through the fairway on the left. Safest play: 240 yds Blue (220 White) aimed center to left-center. Where to miss: left half, accepting a longer second from a flat lie. Avoid: right ridges, right ravine. Low handicap: driver center-left with a controlled draw for RH players. Mid handicap: 3-wood center-left. High handicap: 5/7 wood or hybrid left-center. CaddyTips® always recommends that the last couple of swings you take on the driving range should be practicing this tee shot and visualizing your success.
