Tee Shot
Three facts govern all eighteen holes and they are not the facts most courses hand you. First, the width is genuine. Fairways here run up to 66 yards across and there are 107 acres of maintained turf. You are not going to lose a golf ball, so the anxiety you normally spend on tee shots can be redirected toward making a smooth, free swing. Second, the greens are enormous — 10,576 square feet on average — which sounds forgiving and is not, because the wrong section leaves a putt you cannot realistically hole. Third, twelve of the eighteen greens have gathering contours built in, and six do not. Every hole in this guide tells you which one you are standing on.
One more: the greens are creeping bent grass, firm and tightly mown. Grain will not move your ball noticeably here — the built contours will, and they are what you read all day.
This opener is generous off the tee, but do not let that distract you from picking a very specific target. It is a par 4 of moderate length with room on both sides, and it is the eleventh index for good reason. Best angle: anywhere in the short grass, favoring the side the flag sits on. This is a hole to find a rhythm rather than a hole to attack.
Low handicap: driver is the obvious play and it carries almost no penalty here, but if your warm-up was short or the first tee is making you tight, a 3-wood to the middle leaves a mid-iron into a gathering green and starts the round on the fairway. Neither choice costs you a stroke, which is exactly why this is a good place to make the comfortable one.
Mid & High Handicap: driver at the center of the fairway and swing freely — there is more room here than on any opening hole you have played this year. If you tend to leak the ball right, aim down the left half and let the width absorb it.
