HOLE 1 - NICKLAUS GREETING
Generous, wide parkland opening hole
Par 4 - 419 / 397 / 368 yds.
Tee Shot
Before you head to the first tee of this unique Nicklaus redesign, roll by the 9th and 18th greens to scope them out and check the pin placements. This will give you a sneak peek of what's to come and will help you visualize your approach shots on these holes.
The first hole was designed to alleviate first-tee jitters for resort players, but don't let that wide fairway keep you from picking a laser-like target. Deep, Nicklaus signature bunkers guard the right rough, so a left-center target is ideal. This property is pretty wide-open and exposed to the wind, which typically is right-to-left on this hole, but can also be into the wind.
Low handicap: A well-hit driver from the back tees can clear the right bunker at 280 on the fly. Fairway wood or hybrid could be considered if you feel you cannot pull off the driver over the traps at an 80% success rate. Mid-High handicap: Driver is recommended if you feel good about it, due to the accommodating fairway. However, if you are not completely confident that you can hit the fairway with your driver 80% of the time here, then pull a fairway wood or hybrid and begin the round with a fairway hit in regulation.
