HOLE 1 - BRUCE BORLAND TRIBUTE
Short, strategic opener
Par 4 - 380 / 346 / 333 yds.
Tee Shot
Before you embark on this Jack Nicklaus design, take a moment to swing by the 9th and 18th greens near the clubhouse. This will give you a good understanding of these greens and the pin placements, which will set you up for success when visualizing these approach shots.
Then off to the first tee, where Jack starts you off with a gentle par 4 that plays slightly downhill to a relatively wide landing zone. Bunkers guard the right side of the fairway and the course is very exposed to the elements, so the wind will most likely play a factor on every shot. This hole will most likely play into the wind that comes off the ocean. CaddyTips® recommends teeing the ball a bit lower with your driver into the wind in order to lower the trajectory a bit.
Low handicap: The ideal approach angle to this well-guarded green is from the right side of the fairway. If the wind is not blowing hard, a driver up the right side of the fairway can take the bunkers out of play. Mid-high handicap: Driver is not necessary here, so pull the club that gives you the most confidence in hitting the fairway. Remember, if it's breezy, swing easy.
There is a tribute to one of Jack Nicklaus' brilliant and highly respected senior golf course designers, Bruce Borland, adjacent to this 1st tee.
