 Bailout Areas
The safe play that saves your round

Bailout areas are spots on the course intentionally placed away from trouble - flat, spacious, and usually mown like fairway or fringe. Course architects build them in for a reason: every golfer misses greens, and a smart miss is a recoverable miss. You'll find bailout areas near most green complexes, on tee shots, and in the lay-up zones of par 5s.

The 17th at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island is the textbook example. The par 3 demands a long all-carry shot over water to a well-guarded green. But Pete Dye built an extended fringe area to the LEFT of the green for golfers who don't want to risk the carry. Playing the bailout leaves a manageable chip and keeps a big number off the card. The math is simple: if you can't reach the green 8 out of 10 times, the bailout is the smarter target. Going for it and finding the water turns a possible par into a guaranteed bogey or worse - now you're re-teeing, lying three, and praying.

KEY TIP

Before every pre-shot routine, ask: "Where's the safe miss?" If you can't name it, you haven't planned the shot properly.
