Tee Shot
Erin Hills governs all eighteen holes with the same three rules. One: the ground is firm and never flat, so the ball keeps moving after it lands — often a long way, often sideways. Your carry number is only half the calculation. Two: the fairways are enormous, 40 to 70 yards across, but the fine fescue outside them is a hazard rather than rough. Three: the greens are bent grass, firm and tightly mown. Grain is a minor factor next to slope — on every green here, gravity is the story and grain is a footnote.
There are no trees, and the routing turns through most of the compass — the wind on this tee is a different wind by the 5th and different again by the 12th. The 3rd normally plays into the prevailing breeze and the 5th down it; those are your calibration points. Re-read it on every tee. In 2017 this course gave up a record 31 under par totals across three near-calm rounds, then became the most demanding scoring day of the championship the moment Sunday gusted to 15–20 mph.
Pre-round tip: walk up to the high ground by the Lodge before you tee off. You can see the 1st, the 18th and much of the middle of the course — and you are reading which way the fescue lies, which tells you what the wind is doing across the whole property rather than just at the clubhouse.
The hole is a genuine three-shotter with wetland down the entire left side and a bunker guarding the right. Avoid: the wetland left — it is a hazard, not a recovery. The fairway between them is generous, so this is about picking a side.
Low Handicap: driver at the right center, favoring the bunker side to shorten the angle in.
Mid & High Handicap: 3 wood or hybrid down the right half — you are playing three shots regardless, so take the water entirely out of play.
