Tee Shot
While Bethpage Red is known as the kinder, gentler sibling to the Black Course, the opening hole does little to support that reputation. This long, uphill par 4 begins from an elevated tee box, with a wasteland and thick fescue protecting the entire right side of the hole. The trouble naturally favors a left-center target line off the tee.
During the summer months, Long Island's prevailing southwest winds typically cause this hole to play into the wind. In the fall and early spring, however, northerly winds often turn it into a downwind tee shot. CaddyTips® recommends teeing your driver slightly lower when playing into the wind to produce a more penetrating ball flight, and slightly higher when playing downwind to maximize launch and carry. Making this simple adjustment helps optimize your trajectory and gives you the best chance of finding the fairway.
Low Handicap: Be aggressive from the start. Hit driver to maximize distance from the back tees while favoring the left-center of the fairway.
Mid-to-High Handicap: This is a great hole to build confidence with your driver. However, if your typical miss is to the right, consider hitting a fairway wood or hybrid to take the wasteland out of play. The ultimate goal here is starting your round by finding the middle of the fairway and giving yourself an easy walk to your opening approach shot.
