Hole 1 - First Tee, Big Stage
A friendly opener, if there is one
Par 4 - 430 / 405 / 380 yds.
Tee Shot
Welcome to "The Black" as the locals call it. Tillinghast starts you off with one of the easier tee shots of the day. This elevated tee box and the predominant wind normally blowing down and off the left will help shorten this hole. Expect your drive to carry an extra 5-7 yards. Long hitters can flirt with driving the green, but note that the front of the green is very narrow, so a drive missing on the wrong side leaves a tricky up-and-down. Conditions set the tone, but the rough is already lurking and can be very penal around The Black— fairway first. Low handicaps: driver only if you can control the side; the narrow front punishes the wrong miss. Mid handicaps: a 3-wood or driver to the fairway favoring the left side for a better angle, leaving around a full wedge for an accurate approach. High handicaps: the club you can put in the short grass; big emphasis on hitting the fairways out here, so put your ego aside and hit fairway, hybrid or even iron to secure the fairway.
