Tee Shot
The opening hole at Wynn Golf Club sets the tone for the round: smart decisions beat bold ones. While the hole gently bends to the right, don't let the lone inside fairway bunker lure you into taking unnecessary risks. The fairway naturally feeds balls toward the bunker, making it more dangerous than it appears from the tee. CaddyTips® recommends favoring the left-center of the fairway, where you'll find plenty of room and the ideal angle to attack the green.
One of the biggest mistakes golfers make is assuming this hole rewards maximum distance. It doesn't. Long hitters can certainly challenge or carry the bunker, but the fairway runs out beyond it, leaving an awkward stance or a more difficult approach. This is one of those holes where disciplined course management pays better dividends than raw power.
Legendary Golf Tip: Jack Nicklaus often said that great golf begins with choosing the correct target. Pick a precise target, commit to it completely, and make one confident swing. Indecision costs far more strokes than a swing that misses its target.
Caddy's Wager: Think of this tee shot like the first hand at the blackjack table. Professional gamblers aren't trying to hit a jackpot on the opening deal—they're simply trying to put themselves in a winning position. The same principle applies here. Take the high-percentage play, keep the ball in the fairway, and let the birdie opportunities come to you.
Low Handicap: Driver is a perfectly acceptable play, but only if you're committed to the left-center target. Resist the temptation to challenge the bunker for a few extra yards. The reward rarely outweighs the risk.
Mid Handicap: Aim at the left-center of the fairway with your most reliable club off the tee. The fairway will provide plenty of roll, and you'll leave yourself a comfortable approach without bringing the bunker into play.
High Handicap: Play this hole conservatively and trust your game. Keep the bunker completely out of the equation, find the short grass, and build confidence from your very first swing. In Vegas, the best gamblers survive by protecting their bankroll. On the golf course, protect your scorecard the same way.
