HOLE 1 - SHANGRI-LA
A gentle dogleg-left — water down the entire left side
Par 4 - 415 / 389 / 344 yds.
Tee Shot
Shadow Creek eases you into the round with a picturesque dogleg-left framed by towering pines and a creek that hugs the entire left side from tee to green. While it appears to be a comfortable opening hole, Tom Fazio immediately begins asking strategic questions. The fairway pinches dramatically around 190 yards and subtly tilts toward the creek, making this a hole where discipline is rewarded far more than brute force. Your first objective at Shadow Creek isn't distance—it's putting your golf ball in the proper position.
CaddyTips® recommends favoring the right-center of the fairway, allowing the natural right-to-left contour to feed your ball toward the middle while keeping the creek comfortably out of play. Many players instinctively reach for driver because of the modest yardage, but this is one of those holes where less club often produces the better scoring opportunity. The ideal tee shot leaves a full view of the kidney-shaped green while taking the left-side water almost completely out of the equation. Resist the temptation to squeeze a few extra yards out of the opening swing—the round is just beginning, and Shadow Creek rewards patience.
Low Handicap: A controlled fairway finder—whether that's driver, 3-wood, or driving iron—is the preferred play. The goal isn't maximum distance; it's finding the ideal angle into the green while staying short of the fairway's narrowest section. If driver brings the pinch or left bunker into play, there's very little to gain.
Mid-to-High Handicap: This is an ideal hole to start the day with a club you know you'll keep in play. A fairway wood, hybrid, or long iron short of the pinch leaves a comfortable approach while eliminating the big number. Remember, pars are earned by keeping the ball in front of you, and there's no better way to settle into the round than by finding the first fairway.
