Tee Shot
Many golfers consider the opening hole at Wailea Gold the course's signature hole, thanks to its breathtaking panoramic views. Take a moment to enjoy them—then lock in on a precise target.

Although Wailea's leeward location typically produces calmer conditions than Kapalua, wind remains a major factor. This elevated tee shot is especially susceptible to changing conditions. Mornings are often calm due to an offshore land breeze, while the prevailing northeast trade winds usually arrive by midday, creating a helping breeze down this southwest-facing hole. The result is extra carry and rollout on your opening drive.

Occasionally, Kona winds move in and reverse the normal pattern, turning this into a completely different tee shot. If you hear the staff mention "Kona winds," expect a headwind instead of the usual helping breeze and adjust your club selection accordingly.

Low-handicap: Resist the temptation to cut the corner or chase the green. You'll have better opportunities to drive the green on Nos. 4 and 6. Instead, favor the right-center of the fairway with a fairway wood or hybrid. The fairway slopes downhill from right to left, so your ball will naturally feed toward the center, leaving a comfortable wedge into the green.

Mid-High Handicap: Start your round by putting the ball in play. Hit a fairway wood or hybrid toward the generous right side of the fairway and make a smooth, confident swing. The downhill slope, firm fairway, and typical afternoon tailwind will provide plenty of distance without needing to force the shot.
