Downhill, into the mountains, and it starts hard

THE MAN THIS HOLE IS NAMED FOR DIED ON THIS LAND Peter Stocker was a founding partner of The Santa Lucia Preserve and the driving force behind putting a golf course on it. He perished while surveying the twenty-thousand-acre ranch that became this club. In 1990, his friends Sandy Tatum - past president of the USGA - and George Kelley founded the Stocker Cup in his memory. It has been contested here every year since the course opened, and it remains one of the finest amateur events in American golf. You are standing on the first hole of his golf course, and it carries his name.
The round opens with the hole unfurling downhill below you and the coastal Santa Lucia Mountains filling the horizon behind the green. It is one of the great opening views in California golf. This is rated the third most challenging hole on the property, which is an unusual thing for an opener and worth respecting before you have found your swing.
Target line: the mountain backdrop, using the fall of the land rather than fighting it.
Low handicap: take the width the hole offers and let the slope run the ball out. On a hole rated this difficult, position off the tee is worth more than the extra twenty yards - and you have not hit a shot yet today.
Mid & High Handicap: your most reliable club at the middle. A downhill opening tee shot with a view like that invites an over-swing, and the one thing this hole does
not require is extra distance.
