Tee Shot
This Playing Guide covers Saratoga Spa's Main Routing, the layout used for the vast majority of rounds throughout the season. While the facility offers additional golf, you can expect to play this routing unless the golf shop notes otherwise.
The opening hole is designed to ease you into the round with a generous landing area before the course begins asking more challenging questions over the next several holes. While the fairway appears wide from the tee, a committed swing and a precise target are still the keys to getting your round off to the right start.
The mature pines framing both sides of the fairway provide a beautiful first impression while naturally defining your target. During the summer months, the prevailing southwest wind typically plays into and slightly from the left, although the surrounding trees soften its effect. CaddyTips® recommends checking the treetops and the practice flag near the clubhouse to confirm the day's wind conditions.
Low Handicap: This is a green light to hit driver and set an aggressive tone early. The fairway is generous, rewarding a committed swing while providing an ideal angle into the large opening green. There's little advantage to shaping the ball aggressively—split this fairway in half and let your precision create a birdie opportunity with your wedge or short-iron approach.
Mid-High Handicap: Start your round by finding the short grass—a theme you'll want to carry throughout the day. A fairway wood, hybrid, or controlled driver aimed at the center of the fairway will leave a comfortable approach while keeping the surrounding pines out of play. There's no need to force distance on the opening tee shot. Building confidence and establishing rhythm are far more valuable than squeezing out a few extra yards.
If you choose to hit driver, CaddyTips® recommends choking down an inch or two on the grip and standing slightly closer to the ball. This simple adjustment helps you find the center of the clubface more consistently, reducing sidespin and increasing accuracy. Remember, your goal today isn't to hit the longest drives—it's to hit as many fairways as possible.
