HOLE 1 - OAK'S WELCOME

Tee Shot
Sable Oaks opens with a generous fairway that invites confidence, but don't mistake generosity for permission to swing out of your shoes. This hole introduces the philosophy you'll see throughout the course: the best angle into the green is almost always more valuable than an extra twenty yards.

The wide fairway gently bends left around a magnificent century-old oak tree that gives the hole its name. While the tree appears to sit directly in play from the tee, it actually serves as your first visual lesson. Golfers who instinctively steer away from it often finish too far right and will catch a bunker that is in play from every tee. Instead, trust your target – an old windmill in the distance and let the fairway that slopes slightly right-to-left do the work. The ideal tee shot finishes in the left-center portion of the fairway, providing a clean, open look to the putting surface.

The prevailing Salinas Valley winds will make this hole play into the wind, especially in the afternoon. CaddyTips® recommend that you tee the ball a bit lower with a driver if the headwinds are up. This will help you flight the tee shot with a lower trajectory.

Low Handicap / Longer Hitters: Driver is recommended as this fairway is very friendly and receptive. The longest of hitters can clear the mighty oak with a high towering drive that needs to carry 265 yards, leaving a wedge into this green and starting the round with an aggressive tone. Tee your ball on the right side of the tee box to naturally open the angle into the fairway to follow the shape of the hole.

Mid & High Handicap: If driver is your most reliable club, swing it confidently. If your driver is not your most reliable club off the tee, don't let ego make the decision. A fairway wood or hybrid finishing in the center of the fairway leaves a comfortable approach and significantly improves your chances of starting the day with par.

Approach
The green sits slightly above the fairway and features a false front that rejects shots landing just short. Take enough club to comfortably carry ten yards from the front edge distance.

Low Handicap: If the hole location is center, back-center, or back-left, you can confidently attack. These locations provide ample green to work with and reward solid distance control. The front-left pin is a sucker pin as the false front will eat up any shot that doesn’t land hole high.

Mid & High Handicap: This green is very receptive to approach shots with its back-to-front slope, so it will hold a well-struck 5/7 wood or hybrid. The oak tree located to the right of the green will provide a challenging up-and-down attempt for shots that stray to the right. There is a bail-out area of extended fringe located to the left of the green that provides an easy chance for an up-and-down scramble.  

Green
This gently undulating back-to-front bent grass green introduces golfers to the putting surfaces they'll see throughout Sable Oaks. At first glance, the green appears almost flat. It isn't.

A subtle ridge runs diagonally through the center of the putting surface, creating two distinct sections. Putts traveling across the ridge lose speed before gradually feeding toward the lower portion of the green. Chips and putts from the bottom of the false in front of the green will be slow up the steep hill.

Most putts also carry a slight influence toward the ancient oak beside the right side of the green, an effect that's easier to feel than to see during your first round.
