THE FRIED EGG STORY —SHACKELFORD'S 'IT LOOKED LIKE AN ABANDONED HOLE'
The sandy scar splitting the fairway is an old EARTHQUAKE FISSURE — already there Shackelford and Hanse arrived. Shackelford: 'It looked like an abandoned hole. It was THAT good.' A long par 5 that tends to play much shorter than the yardage. Going for the green in two, the miss LEFT is a difficult chip onto a green that runs away from you.

A long par 5 — the fairway's diagonal scar is an old earthquake fissure; the hole plays shorter than the yardage suggests. Low handicap / long hitters: length is rewarded on the easiest feeling opener — pick a side that opens the second. Mid/high handicap: swing freely, the fairway is generous; the hole rewards a calm start.
