HOLE 1 - FIRM HANDSHAKE
One of the most demanding openers in the rota

Par 4  -  447 / 443 / 424 yds.

Tee Shot
Out of bounds runs the entire right side. The prevailing wind blows left-to-right — straight at it. The fairway bends left behind a bunker notched into a mound, and the hole has averaged near 4.4 strokes across recent Opens. Par on the 1st is a hard-earned win.

This is a less-than-driver hole, and the world's best treat it that way. The bunker on the mound up the left is only about 230 yards out — and the accepted play is to lay back short of it, because the alternative is a left-to right wind pushing a driver toward the boundary fence. SMART MISS: short and left, into the fescue side of the corridor. OB right is a stroke and distance; the left rough is only a stroke of position. Long hitters: the closer you finish to that left bunker without reaching it, the better the angle you buy.
