Tee Shot
Welcome to Los Angeles—where your first tee shot might have an audience. Rancho Park is one of the busiest municipal golf courses in America, so don't be surprised if golfers near the starter's window, practice green, and restaurant patio are watching as you tee it.

CaddyTips® recommends arriving at least an hour early to the busy facility to loosen up on the range and settle into your game, especially for an early tee time. Before heading to the first tee, take a quick walk to the 18th green to study the green complex and that day's pin position. Visualizing your final approach shot before you even start the round is a simple trick that can pay dividends hours later.

The opening hole is all about getting the ball in play. It's a tree-lined fairway with no water to worry about, but plenty of trouble if you stray into the trees. There's no reason to force anything here—aim for the center of the fairway and favor the side that opens the best angle to the day's pin. Rancho sits near sea level, but the afternoon marine breeze off Santa Monica Bay can influence club selection, so use the first few holes to get a feel for the wind.

Low Handicap: If you are very accurate with your driver, than that's the play and you will be rewarded with wedge or short iron to a small green. Otherwise, a fairway wood, hybrid or even iron is fine to make sure you have a clean look on approach.

Mid & High Handicap: Choose the club you're most confident will find the fairway. The goal is to begin your round with a clean look at the green, not to impress anyone watching from the patio. If the gallery has your nerves up, teeing up a driver for maximum confidence is perfectly acceptable.

CaddyTips® : Your last few swings on the driving range should be with the club you'll hit on the 1st tee. Step into every swing visualizing the perfect opening tee shot—you'll be surprised how often your body follows your mind.
