Aloha from the Garden Isle, one of the wettest places on earth. Make sure to check the weather report before you head to the course, as it typically rains at least once a day here at Poipu Bay and you will want to bring extra towels, a change of clothes, and an umbrella. This course hosted the Grand Slam of Golf for a number of years and Tiger Woods won the event seven times. Be sure to check out the historic photos that line the wall outside of the pro shop.
Although the first hole plays slightly uphill, this should be offset by the prevailing tailwinds. Both the right and left sides of the fairway are well-guarded by bunkers. The target line is just inside the right bunker at a noticeable grouping of palm trees. Pick a specific palm tree in this cluster , as this will help you dial in laser-like focus.
Low handicap: long hitters can fly the bunker guarding the left rough with a drive of 275+ carry and leave a wedge in for the approach. This is a good play if you want to set an aggressive tone early in your round. Mid-High handicap: The fairway is wider than it appears, and the only real trouble is the bunkers, so driver is a good play to start. If you lack confidence with the driver, then a fairway wood or hybrid is fine too, as the goal is to hit the first fairway and build from there. CaddyTips® recommends teeing the ball a bit higher with the driver to launch it higher to ride the tailwind.
