Tee Shot
Welcome to the infamous PGA West Stadium Course, home of the Skins Game for years, and one of the courses in the Bob Hope Desert Classic. Pete Dye demands accuracy from the very first tee. And normally this hole will play into the wind, which is either howling or barely a factor. Ideal target: LEFT-CENTER fairway — best angle for the approach AND avoids both bunker complexes. Left bunker carry: 230 yds Black / 175 White / 147 Gold. Right bunker: reachable with a good drive — fade-pushers beware. Where to miss: short of the left bunker, center of the fairway. Avoid: the right bunker (longer carry to the green from there); any drive that ends up between the two bunkers. Dye's opening hole is a club selection
test. Driver isn't required if you can't carry 230 — accept a longer second from the fairway. Low handicap: driver left-center, carry both bunker lines. Mid handicap: 3-wood left-center, position short of the left bunker. High
handicap: 5/7-wood or hybrid down the middle, accept a long-iron approach. CaddyTips® always recommends that the last couple of swings you take on the driving range should be practicing this tee shot and visualizing your success.
