Tee Shot
Welcome to Jack Nicklaus' masterpiece on the Garden Isle, home of Hawaii's longest stretch of oceanside golf - half a mile. But before you tee off, take a cart to check out the impressive 9th and 18th green complexes and the daily pin positions. This will help you visualize these approach shots on these pivotal holes and set you up for success.
This course is famous for three things: ocean holes, lighthouses, and WIND. We've seen shots blow backward on this course, and luckily the first hole will play downwind. Stepping up to the elevated tee box, you face Mauka (toward the mountains) directly. The view features a wide fairway framed by mature, lush mango and guava trees, setting a serene tropical atmosphere. Far right is danger, but your target will be so tight, your miss will still be in the fairway. Jack let's you swing freely here, so pick a very specific target and lock in.
Low handicap: give the driver a rip and get the gears moving with left-center as your target. CaddyTips® recommends teeing the ball a bit higher to launch it and take advantage of the wind. Mid-High handicap: good place to start to get your driver working as it's very spacious up at the landing area. If you have a big miss to the right with your driver, then you should consider a fairway wood or hybrid.
