Tee Shot
Welcome to the River. Before the first swing, a few truths that hold for all eighteen holes. This is Pete Dye target golf along the Sheboygan River, with water in play on the majority of the course and very few places to bail out — a missed shot finds sand, water, or rough more often than a kind slope.
The greens run on bentgrass: true and quick, read for slope and pace rather than grain. And the whole property tilts and rolls, so tees and greens sit above or below you all day. Take what each hole gives, and par is a hard-earned win here.
A word on wind. Unlike Whistling Straits out on Lake Michigan, the River sits low in a tree-lined valley. You often won't feel the breeze on the tee even when it's pushing the treetops, and it can funnel along the river corridor in ways the flag won't show. Trust your yardage.
The bigger variable all day is elevation, not wind. One pre round move pays off: on the practice green, gauge the day's speed and firmness, and remember that near the river the surfaces feed toward the water. That single read returns on 1, 16 and 18. Now the opener. Snake is a reachable par 5 with the Sheboygan River running the entire left side — the view that defines your day. The landing area is generous, so this is about position, not heroics.
Low Handicap / Longer Hitters: a good drive leaves a real chance to get home in two. Best angle: favor the right-center off the tee to keep the river off your shoulder and open the second.
Mid & High Handicap: driver at the right-center, then a comfortable lay-up to your favorite wedge number. There's no prize for forcing a second over the left bunkers.
