Downhill into the canyon — the first decision is a lay-up

Before you tee off, understand the three rules that define Balboa Park. First, the scorecard yardage is deceiving. At just 6,347 yards from the Blue Tees, the course plays much longer because nearly every hole climbs uphill. Second, every canyon is a lateral penalty area by local rule, with only a narrow strip of rough separating the fairway from trouble. In many places, two steps offline means a penalty. Third, expect uneven lies throughout the round. A balanced, controlled swing will consistently outperform an aggressive one. 

Afternoon winds often build off San Diego Bay, adding another layer of strategy, while the course sits directly beneath the flight path into Lindbergh Field—don't be surprised if jets become part of the soundtrack. Only the 1st and 17th holes play noticeably downhill. Everywhere else, expect to club up more often than the yardage suggests.

Before heading to the first tee, spend a few minutes at the clubhouse overlooking the course. From this elevated vantage point, you can study several holes, get a feel for the canyon edges, and roll a few putts on a practice green that closely matches on-course speed. It's the best free course preview you'll get all day.

Low handicap/long hitters: Resist the temptation to hit driver. The green is too small to reliably hold with a wood. A controlled tee shot of about 200–225 yards leaves a scoring wedge into the green and offers your best birdie opportunity. Remember, this opening shot plays downhill, so expect 15–20 yards of additional carry when selecting your club.

Mid-High handicap: This opening hole is all about placement. Thanks to the downhill elevation, your tee shot will carry 15–20 yards farther than normal, making a fairway wood or hybrid the ideal choice. Favor the right side of the fairway, away from the bunker on the left, and you'll set up a much simpler approach.
