 Design Philosophy
"Each hole should be individually memorable"

Tillinghast's central design belief: every hole should be INDIVIDUALLY memorable. No two holes on a Tillinghast course looks the same, plays the same, or ask the same question. He hated the formulaic. He loved variety.

He built a strategy through THREE primary toolsBunkering - massive, dramatic, and placed to force decisions on every shot. Green contouring - large, severely sloped greens that punish careless approach shots and reward precise ones. Routing using natural land features (ridges, valleys, water) to dictate the line of play before you ever swing. His courses don't have a signature hole. They have signature HOLES - plural. The 7th at San Francisco Golf Club (his personal favorite). The 10th at Winged Foot. The 18th at Baltusrol Lower. The 4th at Bethpage Black. Each unforgettable. Each unique.
