HOLE 1 - RIFLE SIGHTS
The most polarizing opening tee shot in golf
Par 5  -  558 / 547 / 521 yds.

Tee Shot
TWO HILLS, ONE DECISION, AND IT'S NOT WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. The tee shot plays through a V cut between two large hills Strantz built specifically for this effect - widely called the single most polarizing opening tee shot in golf. Get away a good one and the ball bounding down the far side is immensely satisfying. Get caught on either hillside and the round starts with a lost stroke before you've settled in. Here's what almost nobody realizes standing on the tee: the two hills are staggered. The right hill sits about 20 yards closer to the tee than the left one. That means carrying the right hill is a genuinely shorter shot than it looks - the club's own director of golf has said the average golfer who fades the ball is pleasantly surprised how often it clears. The bigger prize sits on the left: carrying that hill gains 15 to 20 extra yards of roll from the contoured fairway beyond it, and opens the best angle into a green set open on the front-left. A starter often stands on the right hillside to help spot drives. Take that as the tell it is - the right side is the more forgiving miss.

The course announces itself immediately. Two large hills frame the fairway like rifle sights, and the shot through the gap between them is blind the moment it leaves the club.

Target line: the right hill if you fade the ball or want the higher percentage carry; the left hill, deliberately, if you can carry it and want the extra roll and the open angle into the green.

Low handicap: challenge the left hill. The 15 to 20 yards of extra roll and the front-left opening into the green are worth the harder carry, and this hole rewards that commitment all the way to the putting surface.

Mid & High Handicap: play at the right hill, which is a shorter carry than it appears from the tee. Getting into the fairway on the far side matters far more here than
which side you find it from.
