HOLE 1 - NO EASING IN
A long uphill par 4 — one of golf's hardest openers
Par 4 - 474 / 464 / 447 yds.
Tee Shot
HANDICAP 4 — Coore & Crenshaw open with a long uphill par 4 bordered by waste area and dunes. Dunes short of the fairway make the landing look narrower than it is; the elevated, back-to-front green rejects a long approach. Strong players miss long (no spin into the elevated green) and face a slick downhill putt; the average player's short miss leaves an easy uphill pitch — pure design genius.
A long uphill par 4 — the fairway is generously wide but dunes short of it make it look narrow; the key is to avoid the RIGHT fairway bunker. Low handicap / long hitters: ignore the visual intimidation — the landing area is wider than it looks; favor the leftcenter away from the right bunker. Mid/high handicap: swing freely at the fat of the fairway; the dunes are a trick of the eye, not in play.
