Tee Shot
Before you head to the first tee, CaddyTips® recommends checking out the hole location and green complexes on the 9th and 18th holes, which are near the clubhouse. The prevailing wind in the Las Vegas valley blows from the west, southwest, or south. The mornings here are normally very calm, but as the desert heat picks up later in the day, the course becomes notoriously breezy. Because the front nine winds through natural arroyos and steep canyon settings, the wind tends to swirl and cut across the fairway rather than blowing directly downwind from behind the tee box. The air is dry and thin, and you are at 2,100 ft in elevation, so expect the ball to travel 5-7 yards farther than sea level. Target is center fairway on this short but challenging opener. The landing area is guarded by three bunkers LEFT and two RIGHT. From the back tees the RIGHT bunkers run 200-265 yds. (175-240 blue / 145-210 white). Two bunkers on the LEFT start 255 from the back (230 blue / 200 white). Low handicap: a positioned 3-wood or hybrid/long iron between the bunker clusters is plenty. Mid/high handicap: lay short of 200 — accuracy off the first tee sets the tone on a true desert course that punishes the spray. CaddyTips® always recommends that the last couple of swings you take on the driving range should be practicing this tee shot and visualizing your success.
