Hole 1 - Wide Welcome
Wide fairway, narrow margin for error left
Par 4 - 410 / 390 / 333 yds.
Tee Shot
Strawberry Farms was built in an environmentally protected area which comes into play nearly every hole including this one. A good goal to start the round would be committing to not taking a single penalty shot from these areas. Here in Irvine, the typical afternoon sea breeze blows from the South-Southwest or Southwest, so this tee shot should play crosswind from left to right. You are far enough from the coast that the ball should fly normal distances. Ideal target: aim at the RIGHT GREENSIDE BUNKER off the tee — sets up the perfect angle. Wide fairway, but the LEFT SIDE is an ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD the entire length of the hole. Fairway bunker locations: LEFT trap sits 170 yds from the center of the green; RIGHT trap sits 117 yds from the center. Where to miss: right — short of the right bunker is fine and leaves a clean look. Avoid: left environmental hazard at ALL COSTS. Low handicap: driver at the right greenside bunker line. Mid handicap: 3-wood right-center is a good play if you have a tendency to miss it left. High handicap: 5/7-wood or hybrid right of center — accept a longer second from a clean lie and get the round started off right. CaddyTips® always recommends that the last couple of swings you take on the driving range should be practicing this tee shot and visualizing your success.
