Here is a snippet from the Pasatiempo Golf Club CaddyTips®
Hole 1 - Severely Downhill With A View
Best view on the course, two clubs downhill
Par 4 - 457 / 441 / 457 (PAR 5) yds.
Tee Shot
Marion Hollins, founder of Pasatiempo, picked the perfect spot to start this masterpiece as the opening tee box shows the Santa Cruz Boardwalk and Monterey Bay in the distance — savor the view, then get focused. This hole used to be a par 5, so that puts things into perspective as a par 4. Matter of fact, the hole still plays as a par 5 for the forward tees. Ideal target: DEAD CENTER of the fairway. No fairway bunkers, but the danger is real — LEFT brings OB (driving range), RIGHT brings TOWERING CYPRESS that block the second shot. Plays 2 FULL CLUBS DOWNHILL. Use less club than the number suggests if you decide not to hit driver and play for placement. The predominant wind comes from off the ocean, so this tee will play into the wind. Normally, the mornings are calm with a marine layer that will knock your ball down 5-7 yards. However, that normally burns off in the afternoon, and the breeze will pick up. Where to miss: short-center — leaves a clean look in. Low handicap: driver hit well can set up a desired short iron to a challenging green complex . Mid handicap: 3-wood should carry a long way and set up a mid to short iron when struck well. High handicap: 3/5 wood or hybrid to increase your odds of hitting this fairway. CaddyTips® always recommends that the last couple of swings you take on the driving range should be practicing this tee shot and visualizing your success.
