The Open Doctor
Preparing classic courses for modern majors
His father, Robert Trent Jones Sr. earned the nickname "Open Doctor" by reshaping courses for US Opens in the 1950s-70s -Oakland Hills (1951), Baltusrol (1954), Olympic Club, Congressional. The pattern: take a great old course, modernize it to challenge the world's best, and hand it to the USGA.
Rees took that mantle and ran with it. His US Open
and major championship prep credits: Hazeltine
(1991 US Open, 2002 and 2009 PGAs, 2016 Ryder Cup).
Baltusrol Lower (1993 US Open). Congressional (1997
and 2011 US Opens). Bethpage Black (2002 and 2009
US Opens). Torrey Pines South (2008 US Open - Tiger
on a broken leg). Pinehurst No. 2 (1999 and 2005 US
Opens). The Country Club (1999 Ryder Cup and 2022
US Open).
The role isn't glamorous. It's lengthening holes,
sharpening bunkers, modernizing greens, and adding
strategic interest without destroying the classic
character. It's craftsmanship over signature, which
makes Rees one of the most important and
underrated names in modern golf.
KEY TIP
