General Tips to play Bethpage Black Golf Course

The thick native grasses that line the fairways make Bethpage Black Golf Course play like a desert course. Even though the holes are very long your number one priority should be finding the fairway off the tee. The greens at Bethpage Black Golf Course are typically very firm. Expect for your approach shots to hit and release. Practice your sand game before coming to the Bethpage Black Golf Course. There are lots of very large traps both on the fairways and the greens. There are lots of elevated approach shots into the greens. Remember that when hitting to an elevated green you will typically get less spin, so allow for your shots to hit and release. Also be sure to take enough club! The bunkering on the course has been fine tuned with many of the traps being expanded both in size and depth. Practice your sand game as it will be tested here!

Here is a snippet from the Caddytips from Bethpage - Black Golf Course:

    Hole 4
    Uphill, cross-bunkers – par 5 – 522/517/461 yds.

Tee shot: The safe play on this uphill par 5 will be aimed center fairway, right of the large fairway bunker on the left. A shot carrying 305 yds. from the open tees can carry the bunker on the left (300 yds. blue/260 yds. white). A new US Open tee has been built at 542 yds, but will not be used for the 2009 tournament.

Second shot: To lay up aim down just right of the greenside bunker and play a shot to land 100-75 yds. from the green, this will carry past the deep cross-bunker. If you elect to go for the green in two the shot will play 2 clubs uphill and your bail out is to the right.

Approach shot: This shot will play ½ club uphill and depending your angle of approach may be all carry over the greenside bunker. The green is 22 paces deep and there are collection areas long.

Green: Slopes slightly from back to front and left to right.

I found this site on google and downloaded the tips on the train ride out to the park. I read them to kill the time and I was blown away with how accurate they were. Good stuff in there. The black course is tough and these tips had some really good info. I would have shot even par if I didnt make a bad double on 18. Oh well, lol! I'll download from this website again for sure

Bethpage Black is every bit as hard as you have ever heard about in print, TV, radio, wherever. I had played there once years ago and kind of knew what to expect. Knowing how challenging it is I did as much research as possible before heading back out this summer. I found this site on google and thought it was a great idea. I downloaded the tips and read them thru twice. I probably pulled them out at least a dozen times during my round and I felt like they really helped me score better.

Here is a snippet from the CaddyTips from Bethpage Black:

    Hole 18
    Straight – par 4 – 420/411/394 yds.

Tee shot: Aim down the center of the fairway on this challenging closing hole. The tee shot will play 1 club downhill and long hitters may want to lay back as the fairway bottlenecks between the bunkers. The fairway narrows 290 yds. from the opentees (280 blue/265 white). While the general configuration of the hole remains the same there are several additional bunkers that have been added to the hole in preparation for the 2009 US Open, the net effect is a more visually intimidating tee shot and a slightly tighter landing area for those who choose to challenge the bunkers.

Approach shot: This shot is blind and will play1 club uphill, all carry to the green. The hole is defended by bunkers on the left and right sides. Shots hit too far will face a downhill chip shot. The green is 30 paces deep.

Green: Slopes from back to front and slightly from right to left. This is one of the easier greens on the golf course with very little deception. This green lends itself to be taken advantage of so make a good stroke and trust your line.
