HOLE 1 - THE HANDSHAKE THAT BITES
A gentle dogleg that turns two shots into three
Par 5 - 505 / 485 / 462 yds.
Tee Shot
A gentle dogleg right opens the round, and the drive has to flirt with a bunker on the inside of the turn to find the shortest route home in two. A second bunker pinches the fairway roughly 60 yards short of the green for anyone laying up. Harvey Penick reduced his whole teaching to two words, and there's no better place to start a round with them than the very first tee: take dead aim.
Target line: the inside corner of the dogleg, carrying or skirting the bunker there.
Low handicap: challenge the inside bunker directly for the shortest angle into a green that punishes anything hit even slightly right.
Mid & High Handicap: play safely away from the inside corner, accepting a longer approach in exchange for a clean lie and a full swing at the third.
