Signature Features
Railroad ties, island greens, theater of intimidation
Railroad ties. Pete's most iconic signature. Wooden
sleepers holding back bunker faces and water
hazards are often vertically stacked. They terrified golfers and looked unlike anything American golf had seen before. Used heavily in his 80s-90s era courses PGA West, Kiawah, Whistling Straits.
Island greens. Inspired by the Scottish reverse-slope tee
shots and Alice's flash of insight. Sawgrass 17 is the
prototype, but Pete used island greens at PGA West
(the famous 17th), Casa de Campo, and dozens of
others.
Pot bunkers. Small, deep, often riveted (stacked-sod) bunkers borrowed straight from Scottish links and dropped into American resort and championship layouts.
Stadium mounding. Pete invented "stadium golf" at TPC Sawgrass - building grass amphitheaters
around tees and greens so spectators could see the
action. Every modern tournament venue uses some
version of his idea. Visual intimidation. His most underrated weapon. Many Dye hazards look much worse from the tee than they actually play. He WANTED you scared.
KEY TIP
When you see a Dye railroad-tie bunker orisland green, take a breath. The hazard is real but the visual is amplified. Pick your line and commit.  .
