General Tips to play Pebble Beach Golf Links

The wind at Pebble Beach Golf Links is unpredictable. The famous 7th hole, for example, is a gorgeous short downhill par 3 of only 106 yards. But be prepared to hit a smooth Sand Wedge or Pitching Wedge and, if the winds are gusting, add an extra two to three clubs. The wind at Pebble Beach can be treacherous, so take extra care in deciding how it will affect your shot. Pebble Beach Golf Links has very small greens surrounded by thick rough, so accuracy is paramount. If you do happen to miss a green at Pebble Beach, it is best to miss it short. 17 of 18 greens have areas short of the hole that set up for easy bump and run chips. Keep the ball in play and out of the Monterey Bay. Take in all of the beauty Pebble Beach Golf Links has to offer. You’re sure to have a wonderful golfing experience.

Here is a snippet from the Caddytips from Pebble Beach Golf Links:

    Hole 18
    Dogleg left – par 5 – 543/532/509 yds.

Tee shot: This shot provides you with plenty of options and allows you to cut off as much distance as you want. The first bunker on the right side of the fairway sits at 185 yds. from the blue tees, 175 yds. from the gold tees and 160 yds. from the white tees. The second bunker comes into play at 245 yds from the blue tees, 235 yds. from the gold, and 209 yds. from the white tees. The left edge of the famous tree in the middle of the fairway makes a good target, it is 250 yds from the blue tees, 240 yds from the gold tees, and 215 yds from the white tees. The long knockers can choose to cut off some of the dogleg on the left landing their tee shot left of the famous tree; if you opt for this play take your time in choosing a good line using a rangefinder to shoot the corner where you plan to cut the dogleg (swing with timing and tempo keeping your target on your mind). For higher handicap players, a bail oiut shot short right of the bunker is a great play.

Second shot: Play it safe and aim down the right center and remember that your approach shot generally plays longer than the yardage. The bunker on the left begins at 140 yds. from the green. If you elect to go for the green in two the bail out is right.

Approach shot: This shot plays ½ club uphill and is usually into the wind. The green is protected by water to the extreme left, bunkers (which sit short left, left, long left, short right and right) and a large cypress tree short right which can block out your third shot if you are too far right. The green slopes from back to front and is 28 paces deep.

Green: This green has a general slope from back to front. From the fairway the grain on the green runs to the left. Putts do not break as hard toward the ocean as they may appear. There is a lot of subtle break in this green so make sure to read your putts from all angles. There is some noticeable slope that comes off the right bunker and creates right to left break towards the ocean. Finish your round with some good putting strokes.

I had one of the greatest golfing experiences of my life playing Pebble Beach a month ago and using your tips. We had a caddy in our group but he was working for four of us so that spread him very thin. Luckily I had gone online about a week before the round and downloaded your Tips and read through them to prepare for my round. I found the information in the tips extremely insightful and very accurate. They help me formulate a game plan and even before arriving on the property. This was important for me because I had broken my ankle earlier in the year and was forced to hit a 15 to 20 yard fade which is not my normal ball fight. Game planning for this fade using your tips helped me save at least five shots. I will definitely use your website again and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to play their best golf.

We had an amazing experience at Pebble Beach! Played super early in the morning on a gorgeous day and so there were very few groups a head of us so we played in four hours, which I hear is quite the feat. I was in a really good frame of mind and I used these tips to give me confidence because I had never played there before. We decided to save some money and not take caddies so having these tips were a huge help. I think the best example was on #6 the uphill par 5. That is a tough hole for a 12 handicap like myself and I normally get flustered when I have a blind shot like that. But I trusted the info in the tips and I made par! This is a round of golf that I will remember for a very long time and your tips added tremendously to my experience, so thank you!
