Strategy & Decision Making
Learn the lingo of scoring

Course management - The art of playing the percentages - picking smart targets, accepting layups, and avoiding double bogeys. Course management is what separates good scores from raw talent. Your best round will rarely be your most aggressive one.
Lay up - A deliberate decision to play short of the green or the trouble in front of it. Laying up to your favorite full-swing distance is usually smarter than chipping from an awkward yardage you don't trust.
Sucker pin - A flag tucked behind trouble - a bunker, a slope, a water hazard - designed to bait aggressive players into a big miss. Aim at the center of the green and let the sucker pins win their own battles.
Holds well - Describes a green that accepts shots without much rollout. Softer or back-to-front-sloped greens hold well; firm or crowned greens do not. Adjust your landing target accordingly.
Up-and-down - Getting in the hole in two strokes from off the green - one chip and one putt. A strong short game lives and dies on up and-down percentage.
Stymie - A tree, mound, or other obstacle directly between your ball and your target. Stymies demand creativity - punch out low, curve it around, or take your medicine and pitch sideways.
Provisional - A second ball hit from the same spot when your first ball might be lost or out of bounds. Always announce "I am hitting a provisional" before you swing - otherwise the second ball becomes the ball in play under penalty.
OB (Oscar Bravo)- Out of bounds. Marked by white stakes or a fence line. Penalty is stroke-and-distance - you re-hit from where you played, lying two. Always treat OB as the worst-case miss when choosing a target.
