THE OPENER · A HARD LEFT TURN · OB DOWN THE LEFT
HOLE 1 - THE SEA TURN
A sharp dogleg to an uphill green
Par 5 - 489 / 465 / 444 yds.
Tee Shot
Before anything else, learn the three rules that govern all eighteen holes. The greens break toward the ocean, no matter what the slope appears to do. The grain runs the same way, so putts toward the water are quick and putts back inland are slow. And the entire property tilts to the sea — a wellstruck drive can finish twenty-five yards seaward of where it landed, and flat lies are rare.
The wind is onshore off a Pacific less than a mile away. Mornings often start under a marine layer that burns off by mid-round; the breeze builds through the day and is at its strongest on the back nine. Take the extra club after noon, and expect every exposed shot to be nudged toward the water.
The opener turns hard left, and the first tee faces the ocean, so you are usually hitting into the breeze. The green sits substantially uphill, which is why reaching it in two rarely pays even for long hitters. SMART MISS: rightcenter, short of the corner. Cutting the corner brings OB down the left, and you are not permitted to play an errant drive from the adjacent 18th fairway. Low handicap and long hitters: a controlled draw around the corner is the only version of the aggressive line worth attempting.
Mid-High handicap: play it as a three-shotter
and let the hole ease you into the
round.
